Laford Recounts Campus Response to Meningitis-B Outbreak

Robert Laford, assistant director of Emergency Management, presented a program on the UMass Amherst response to the 2017 meningitis outbreak at the International Association of Emergency Manager’s (IAEM) annual conference in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on Oct. 20. 

The program, “Outbreak! A Campus Response to Meningitis-B,” reviewed the background, planning and response to the declared outbreak of meningitis-B that occurred on campus during fall 2017.

The program, presented to members of the IAEM’s University and College Caucus of several hundred higher-education emergency management peers, shared experiences of the UMass Amherst Office of Emergency Management, campus staff, students and volunteers, and how the campus-wide collaboration played an integral role in the success of the operation,
