Kirby Deater-Deckard, professor in psychological and brain sciences, was honored as a Spotlight Scholar this month.

Deater-Deckard has dedicated his career to studying individual differences in self-regulation, a key aspect of development, with strong connections to behavioral, emotional, and cognitive functioning, as well as health outcomes. He conducts large-scale studies, both in the U.S. and across cultures, with participants ranging from early childhood through adulthood. His research examines genetic, neurological, and physiological factors related to self-regulation, and how they interact with environments in families, neighborhoods, and schools.

Deater-Deckard's research informs public discussions and policies, and he has consulted with groups ranging from the Sesame Workshop to UNICEF on messaging campaigns and healthcare programs related to creating healthy, happy environments for children’s development. Deater-Deckard is an advocate for normalizing the stress associated with raising children and promoting greater social and community support for parents and caregivers.
