Jazz in July Returns to UMass Amherst through July 22
The annual Jazz in July Summer Music Programs, launched 40 years ago by a group of dedicated jazz artists and educators at UMass Amherst to connect students with the country’s top jazz artist/educators for an intensive week of study in jazz improvisation, have returned to the UMass campus, with programming running through July 22.
On Wednesday, July 13 and 20, Club Jazz in July presents participant combos and vocalists in a relaxed club environment, including snacks and a cash bar, at 7 p.m. in the Marriott Center for a suggested donation at the door of $10.
Each Friday of the concentrated two-week program will feature a Jazz Futures Concert performance at 9 a.m. in the Bezanson Recital Hall featuring participants who attend from around the world. Open to the public, the event organizers suggest a “Pay-What-You-Can” donation at the door.
The program concludes on Friday, July 22, at 6 p.m. on the Amherst Town Common with the All Stars performance, a round-robin style concert featuring collaborations between the nationally and internationally known Jazz in July faculty, including vocalist Sheila Jordan, pianist Luis Perdomo and more.
