Jayati Ghosh, Economics, Named by United Nations to High-level Advisory Board on Economic and Social Affairs
Jayati Ghosh, professor of economics, is among 20 prominent personalities appointed by the United Nations (UN) to a high-level advisory board that will provide recommendations for the UN Secretary-General to respond to the current and future socio-economic challenges in the post-COVID-19 world.
The United Nations High-level Advisory Board (HLAB) on Economic and Social Affairs was established in 2018 to help strengthen the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) in the context of United Nations development system reform, and as a key part of efforts to enhance support to Member States of the United Nations in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The HLAB consists of sixteen globally renowned experts in the economic and social policy fields, including former Heads of State, a Nobel Laureate, former Senior Government Officials and intellectual leaders.
Ghosh joined the economics department in the UMass Amherst College of Social and Behavioral Sciences in January 2021. Prior to that, she taught economics at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi for nearly 35 years. She has received several prizes, including for distinguished contributions to the social sciences in India in 2015; the International Labour Organisation’s Decent Work Research Prize for 2010; the NordSud Prize for Social Sciences 2010, Italy.
