Herter Art Gallery Celebrates 50 Years with Works by Wardlaw

The Herter Art Gallery is inaugurating its 50th year on campus with “Disruptions & Continuities: Recent Work” by George Wardlaw. The exhibition will begin with an opening reception on Wednesday, Sept. 25, from 5 until 7 p.m., and will run through Friday, Oct. 25.

Wardlaw, a former professor and department chair in art, died on Friday, July 26 while preparing for his exhibition. As his health increasingly failed, this body of work was created on an iPad, and then painted on canvas by his studio assistant, Kelsi Giguere, a practicing artist and a recent graduate from the department of art. “Disruptions” merges imagery from Wardlaw’s previous work with Picasso’s paintings of women to confront the latter on his depictions and treatment of women. This final work is presented alongside other recent works by Wardlaw.

The Herter Art Gallery is open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday and 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday. The gallery will be open until 8 p.m. on Oct. 3 for Amherst Arts Night Plus and on Oct. 25 for homecoming.
