Hadley Farm Fleeces Available for Hand Spinners
Raw wool sheep fleeces for hand spinners will be available at the Hadley Farm on May 7, when workers shear the UMass Amherst flock.
These are Dorset fleeces, and the sheep have been wearing coats since they came into the barn in October and November, so they are free of hay and other debris. Many of them have a nice fine crimp.
Last year, two of the farm’s fleeces won a 1st and 2nd at the Massachusetts Sheep and Woolcraft Fair in Cummington.
Visitors may also find a ewe to have coated for next year.
Also in stock are the famous EweMass Wool Blankets and yarn, ready for graduation presents.
Contact the shepherd, Alice Newth, at newth@umass.edu if interested in stopping by to see what the Hadley Farm sheep can do.
