George Mwangi Wins Innovative Research in International Education Award

Chrystal A. George Mwangi, assistant professor of higher education in the department of educational policy, research and administration, has been named recipient of the 2018 Innovative Research in International Education Award from NAFSA: Association of International Educators.

The award “celebrates and recognizes new and innovative research with potential or demonstrated impact in the field of international education.” These impacts may include a policy or programmatic change, increased awareness of an issue, or a change in thinking among a group of professionals.

George Mwangi received the award in recognition of her 2017 article, “Partner Positioning: Examining International Higher Education Partnerships through a Mutuality Lens.”

The article explores “60 international higher education partnerships through the lens of mutuality... examining how partners negotiate and navigate power.” These partnerships were created with the goal of addressing international development challenges through collaboration between a university in the majority world and a university in the U.S. Findings emphasized “the process of partnership creation, navigating cross-cultural contexts, partner positioning and partnership dynamics, and stakeholder engagement.”

The award will be presented at the 2018 NAFSA conference May 27-June 1 in Philadelphia.
