Flags Lowered for Somerville Marine Killed in World War II

Gov. Charlie Baker has ordered the United States and Commonwealth flags lowered to half-staff at all state buildings from sunrise until sunset on Friday, June 22, the day of interment, in honor of Pfc. John William MacDonald, USMC, 2nd Battalion, 8th Marines, 2nd Marine Division. Williams, a native of Somerville, participated in the invasion of Tarawa Atoll and was killed in action during the assault on Beach Red 3 on Nov. 20, 1943. His remains have been identified and are returning home to be laid to rest at Bourne National Cemetery.
