Ellsberg Initiative Hosting Week of Training in Anti-Nuclear Activism
The Ellsberg Initiative for Peace and Diplomacy at UMass Amherst is offering a number of anti-nuclear activism training events from Feb. 26-March 1 featuring its inaugural activist in residence, Ira Helfand, M.D. During the week, nuclear abolitionist Dr. Helfand will visit with departments and classes, offer guest lectures and hold office hours. He will also offer a public lecture and a public workshop on anti-nuclear activism.
On Tuesday, Feb. 27, Dr. Helfand will present the talk, “The Growing Danger of Nuclear War and What We Can Do to Prevent It.” The event takes place from 7-8:30 p.m. in ILC S331. The event will also be offered via Zoom; register here.
On Thursday, Feb. 29, the Ellsberg Initiative for Peace and Diplomacy (EIPAD) and Back from the Brink are co-sponsoring a workshop, “What Activists can do to Prevent Nuclear War.” The event, led by Dr. Helfand, will again be held in ILC S331 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and will address questions such as “What are the challenges of anti-nuclear activism?” and “How can we think strategically and tactically to achieve nuclear abolition?"
Dr. Helfand is a member of the International Steering Group of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), which received the 2017 Nobel Peace Prize. He is also past president of the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, co-founder and past president of Physicians for Social Responsibility, and a member of the steering committee of the Back from the Brink coalition, among other affiliations.
