

Economics to Host Workshop on Translating ‘Capital’ for the 21st Century on May 12

The Department of Economics will host a History and Political Economy Workshop, ‘Translating Capital for the 21st Century,’ Monday, May 12 in the Gordon Hall conference room. The event, which runs from 4-5:30 p.m., will also be live streamed on YouTube.
Karl Marx’s “Capital,” first published in 1867, remains one of the most influential books in the history of economics and a new English translation from the German original was recently published by Princeton University Press. This workshop brings together the book’s translator, Paul Reitter, and editor, Paul North, as well as three leading interpreters of Marx to discuss the significance of “Capital” for 21st-century readers.
The event is co-sponsored by The Five College Consortium Lecture Fund, the UMass Political Economy Research Institute (PERI), UMass Social Thought and Political Economy (STPEC), the UMass Labor Center and the Amherst College German Department.
