Among her many research endeavors, Vierling leads a collaborative group of researchers who have undertaken a years-long exploration of the role that mitochondria play in plant productivity. The effort secured support from the National Science Foundation last year.

Vierling is among 120 members and 23 international members in the latest group to be honored by NAS for their distinguished and continuing achievements in original research.

NAS recognizes achievement in science and, with the National Academy of Engineering and National Academy of Medicine, provides science, engineering and health-policy advice to the federal government and other organizations.
