Carolina Cudemus-Jones, director of design and construction management, served as the master of ceremonies and moderator of a panel discussion at this year’s Women Who Build Summit held Feb. 21 at Goodwin College in East Hartford.

The Women Who Build Summit is organized by The Construction Institute of the University of Hartford and attended by architects, engineers, contractors, lawyers, accountants and other professionals in the construction industry. The annual event promotes the strength and rise of women in the construction industry.

Cudemus-Jones moderated the discussion, “A Candid Conversation with the C-Suite: How to Change the Paradigm? Potential Versus Performance,” with authoritative members of the regional construction industry including: Laura Cruickshank, associate vice president of the Planning, Design and Construct Department at the University of Connecticut; Patricia Filippone, executive director at University of Massachusetts Building Authority; Kevin Grigg, president and chief executive officer at Fuss & O'Neill, Inc.; and Frank Haynes, chief operating officer and president of the building division at BOND Brothers, Inc. These “C-suite” executives will share their opinions on what abilities and qualities are needed to make it to the corner office, how to cultivate leadership qualities and what candidates can do to show their leadership team that they are up to the task.

Mireya “Carolina” Cudemus-Jones joined UMass Amherst in October of 2018. Most recently with Gilbane Building Company, Cudemus has more than 20 years of experience in complex private and public commercial construction projects, including health care, higher education and K-12 schools. She serves on the board of directors of the Construction Institute and is active with the Connecticut Professional Women in Construction.
