DEFA Renews Contract with The German Central Office of The Goethe-Institutes

The DEFA Film Library just renewed its contract with the Central Office of the Goethe-Institutes in Munich, Germany, for another three years.

Since 2014, both partners have worked closely together to bring East German DEFA films to the international network of over 160 Goethe-Institutes. Since 2014, the DEFA Film Library has partnered with the Central Office in making theatrical screenings of DEFA films financially accessible for the over 160 member Institutes of the international Goethe network.

For instance, the partnership has recently supported screenings of Carla (1965/90, dir. Herrmann Zschoche) and The Mistake (1991, dir. Heiner Carow) as part of the Kino@Goethe series at the Goethe-Institute Boston.

In addition to in-person screenings, the 2023-25 contract will also include one curated streaming series with five films per year.

Hiltrud Schulz, DEFA Film Library’s production and outreach manager says, “I am so excited that we will continue our close partnership with the Goethe-Institutes. For us, they are important partners in bringing DEFA films to new audiences around the globe and for making our films available for streaming that will hopefully also attract a younger generation of DEFA film enthusiasts.”
