DEFA Film Library at UMass Amherst to Showcase Films by Black German Filmmakers
AMHERST, Mass. – The DEFA Film Library at UMass Amherst, in solidarity with the international Black Lives Matter movement, is showcasing films by Black German filmmakers, actors, scholars and activists during its 2020-21 virtual film festival “Black Lives in Germany: Resilience, Art and Hope.” The festival offers viewers a bold and refreshing look at the diversity of the Black diaspora and contemporary Germany.
All virtual events are presented in English and free and open to the public. Each virtual event includes one or more Vimeo film screenings, followed by a Zoom Webinar Q&A and discussion with filmmakers and other guests.
On March 11, the DEFA Film Library presents “Black Stories and Diaspora,” a conversation with director Branwen Okpako about her film “The Education of Auma Obama” and her other award-winning films. Okpako has generously agreed to make all of her films available to stream for three days leading up to the event.
Participants can register online for the talk
This event is co-sponsored by the Goethe-Institut Boston, the UMass Arts Council and the programs in Film Studies, German & Scandinavian Studies, Music & Dance, and Women, Gender & Sexuality Studies.
