The Office of News and Media Relations welcomes Daegan Miller as its new science writer, covering the College of Natural Sciences and the College of Information and Computer Sciences.

Miller succeeds Jan Lathrop, who was an integral part of the UMass Amherst effort to publicize the many achievements of its scientific researchers. Lathrop retired from the position in December, after 12 years with the News Office.

Miller comes to the UMass Amherst community from his previous post as the outreach and communications manager for the NASA Health and Air Quality Applied Sciences Team, which was headquartered at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. In that role, Miller worked with a team of scientists to help tell the story of their applied research with articles, films, images, and presentations suitable for a wide-ranging audience, from members of the general public to the State Department.

No stranger to the halls of academe, Miller earned a Ph.D. in environmental history and the history of science, and has taught at Cornell University, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the University of Michigan and Portland State University. He’s thrilled to have landed at UMass Amherst. “My passion,” he says, “is to help translate cutting-edge academic research into stories for a well-read, intelligent, but non-specialist audience.”

Miller can be reached at drmiller@umass.edu or 413-362-9754.
