During the week of Jan. 21, the Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) will offer Spring Into Teaching - Empowering Students as Learners, a series of online workshops designed to help faculty refresh their spring semester courses. This year’s workshops and consultation clinic will explore strategies to enhance students’ metacognitive skills and promote self-directed learning within the classroom.

The workshops, which are available online via Zoom and are approximately 90 minutes in length, include:

  • Towards a Pedagogy of Risk-Taking
    Tuesday, Jan. 21
Description: Have you ever wondered, “Why don’t my students take more risks in their work? How come they sit silently during a discussion?” Join us to discuss how to integrate risk-taking in our course design and in-class activities.

  • Supporting Success: Simple Strategies to Help Students Take Charge of Their Learning
    Wednesday, Jan.22
Description: Sometimes students aren’t fully aware of their own learning processes. In this session, we’ll explore a range of simple teaching strategies to help your students become better, more capable and confident learners.

  • Teaching for Persistence, Engagement, and Success
    Thursday, Jan. 23
Description: It can often feel like an uphill battle for student attention. Join us to explore teaching practices that foster students’ engagement, academic success and a sense of belonging, demonstrating how inclusion and academic success are linked.

During the Consultation Clinics, which will be held Jan. 21-23, faculty members will be able to meet with a CTL consultant to find ideas and strategies to tweak or revise course assignments, aspects of the syllabus or teaching strategies for spring classes.

More information, including workshop descriptions and registration, as well as additional resources and events, can be found on the CTL Spring into Teaching website.
