Confino to Deliver Inaugural Pen Tishkach Lecture

Alon Confino, Pen Tishkach Chair of Holocaust Studies, will deliver his inaugural lecture, “What is Holocaust History Today,” on Wednesday, Nov. 14 at 4 p.m. at the Institute for Holocaust, Genocide, and Memory Studies (IHGMS), 758 North Pleasant St., Amherst.

Remarks will be offered by Chancellor Kumble R. Subbaswamy;Julie Hayes, dean of the College of Humanities and Fine Arts; and Dan Gordon, professor of history.

A reception will follow the remarks and lecture. The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

Confino was appointed professor of history and Jewish studies and Pen Tishkach Chair in June.

Meaning “lest you forget” in Hebrew, pen tishkach is the guiding principle behind the endowed chair, which is awarded to a distinguished scholar of the Holocaust who serves as IHGMS director.

Confino, who joined the UMass Amherst faculty in 2017, is the author of “A World Without Jews: The Nazi Imagination from Persecution to Genocide.” A native of Jerusalem, he is an expert on modern German and European history, the Holocaust and genocide, Zionism and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
