Communication’s Alena Vasilyeva Named Recipient of 2022 Marion and Jasper Whiting Foundation Fellowship

Alena Vasilyeva, associate professor of communication in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, has been named the recipient of a 2022 Marion and Jasper Whiting Foundation Fellowship for her work on the project “Exploring Communication, Culture, and Language Ideologies in Argentina.”

The Marion and Jasper Whiting Foundation is a charitable trust fund that awards fellowships to present and prospective teachers employed at New England-based colleges and universities. The foundation's fellowship program aims to stimulate and broaden the minds of teachers to improve and enhance the quality of their instruction by providing travel and related expenses, enabling them to conduct teaching-related projects abroad.

Vasilyeva, an associate professor whose general research interests include deliberation, conflict management, social identity, culture, communication design and the coordination of actions in personal and public contexts, will travel to Argentina to study the language policies and practices in the country, as well as the interconnection between language, identities and language ideologies.
