College of Education to Host International Symposium and Workshop on Bilingual Education in the Americas on Oct. 25

The College of Education will host “Unlocking the Opportunities of Bilingual Education in the Americas,” a hybrid international symposium and workshop, on Saturday, Oct. 25. The event, held in Furcolo Hall and online, will bring together educators, researchers and advocates to explore innovative practices and policies in bilingual education across the Americas.

Presentations scheduled during the day-long event include:

  • “Teaching language is not enough: The Importance of Intercultural Sensitivity and Biliteracy in Bilingual Teaching and Learning,” by Anne Marie Truscott, senior lecturer and emerita researcher at University of the Andes, Colombia
  • “Bridging linguistic and epistemic worlds: bilingualism, engineering y Ciencia Nativa,” by Joel Alejandro Mejía, dean of the College of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Cincinnati
  • “Advancing Equity: Reimagining Bilingual Education through Multilingualism and Critical Interculturality,” an online presentation by Norbella Miranda, associate professor of foreign languages ​​and cultures at the Universidad del Valle, Colombia
  • “A Comparative Cost Analysis of Dual Language Bilingual Education and Traditional Education Schools in Massachusetts,” by Daniel Toro González, coordinator of the UMass Amherst Bilingual Hub 

All presentations will be available to online participants. Following the presentations, in-person attendees will be able to participate in interactive workshops and networking opportunities to further foster collaboration and share insights. 

Light breakfast, coffee and lunch will also be provided for in-person attendees, who are also invited to stay for Salsa-Con Tacos, a dance and cultural activity featuring the BabyBerk food truck and a cash bar, following the day’s activities.

Registration for the event can be completed using this form. In-person attendance is limited to 100.

The event is organized by the UMass Amherst Bilingual Hub and sponsored by Visioning Grants for Faculty Research Initiatives, the Center for Latin American, Caribbean, and Latinx Studies (CLACLS) and the Riccio College of Engineering.
