Distinguished Professor Stephen Clingman, department of English, delivered the 2019 Bram Fischer Memorial Lecture at the University of Oxford in England on Thursday, Oct. 24.

The Bram Fischer Memorial Lecture is a celebration of the life and commitment to justice shown by Rhodes Scholar Bram Fischer.

Fischer was the lawyer and political figure who led the defense of Nelson Mandela and the other accused in the Rivonia Trial of 1964 and Fischer was himself later sentenced to life imprisonment.

Clingman's biography, “Bram Fischer: Afrikaner Revolutionary,” was a joint winner of the Sunday Times Alan Paton Award, South Africa's highest award for non-fiction.

The event was also live-streamed to an invited audience in Johannesburg, South Africa. A video of the talk is now available.
