On the occasion of W. E. B. Du Bois's birthday, the W. E. B. Du Bois Center at UMass Amherst, will host a virtual panel on Tuesday, Feb. 23 at noon, ET. This panel celebrates the centennial of the remarkable and short-lived “The Brownies' Book” (1920-1921), the periodical for Black children edited by Du Bois, Jessie Fauset and Augustus Granville Dill.

Drawing from a range of disciplinary backgrounds, the panelists reflect on the magazine's historical significance and enduring relevance, using 'The Brownies' Book' to consider topics such as Black youth literacy, the centrality of childhood in Du Bois's conception of the souls of Black Americans, and play and movement in the magazine's images.

This panel is a preview of a special issue on “The Brownies' Book” appearing later this year in “Journal of the History of Childhood and Youth.”

Registration is required. Attendees will be sent a Zoom link after registering.
