Center for Latin American, Caribbean and Latinx Studies to Host Inaugural Film Festival Oct. 9-13

To mark Latinx Heritage Month, the Center for Latin American, Caribbean and Latinx Studies (CLACLS) is hosting its inaugural Latinx Film Festival Oct. 9-13. Members of the campus community are invited to screen a movie each day during the festival, starting at 6:30 p.m. in Room S240 of the Integrative Learning Center.
CLACLS promotes research, training and public engagement on the histories, cultures and politics of Latin American and Caribbean peoples across the Americas and throughout the world. The selected films give visibility to a Latinx film production that is generally assimilated into minoritized views of U.S. cinema.
“We would like to celebrate a wide range of Latinx experiences by bringing a series of films that explore issues that affect many of our community members,” says Marta Ceron Leon, CLACLS graduate assistant. “We have chosen films that focus on different topics and themes that correspond to the Latino/a/x experience in the U.S. such as immigration, race relations, ethnicity, queer Latinx entanglements, women’s oppression and the struggles of Afro-Latinx peoples.”
Special guests will include filmmakers Monica Cohen and Samuel Kishi Leopo, as well as Ivan Monalisa, whose life story is featured the film “El viaje de la Monalisa.” They will join the viewings to present their films and be available for questions.
In addition, Monalisa will present a reading from their story collection, “Las Biuty Queens” in a meet-and-greet lunch in Room 301 of Herter Hall at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 12.
