'Carbon' Exhibit Features Works by UMass Amherst Art Students
AMHERST, Mass. – “Carbon,” an exhibition of work by six undergraduate and graduate students in the department of art at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, will be on view Feb. 8-22 at the Herter Art Gallery. An opening reception is being held Thursday, Feb. 8 from 5-7 p.m.
All of the artists in the exhibit are 2017 recipients of the Collaborative Aggregates Art Scholarship. The student artists work in a broad range of materials, languages and concerns. Some explore the dynamic relationship between the body, performance and place. Others mine personal and social memories to create intimate landscapes of photographs, drawings, letters and prints.
Each year, Collaborative Aggregates LLC presents a scholarship to six studio art students at UMass Amherst. Distributed among three graduate students and three undergraduates, the award includes a $1,500 contribution towards the recipient’s tuition, a calendar publication and two exhibitions, one at Herter Art Gallery and the other at the Warner Babcock Institute of Green Chemistry in Wilmington, Mass.
Like the element from which it derives its name, “Carbon” arranges and rearranges itself in multiple ways, presenting the works of these artists in an exciting variety of relationships. While carbon is the foundation of life, each of these artists draw from and speak to the human condition. At once intimate and shared, these narratives invite the viewer to explore, discover, activate, and reinterpret the dynamic diversity of its possibilities and implications.
The student artists are Emma Berry Warren, Eva Lin Fahey, Madeleine Conover, Bibiana Medkova, Amanda Boggs and David Hannon.
Opening night will feature live music by the Cocktail Hour Jazz and a performance by Amanda Boggs and David Hannon. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public. The event is sponsored by Collaborative Aggregates LLC and the department of art.
The oldest exhibition space on campus, Herter Art Gallery is a significant landmark in the university’s commitment to public education as well as the cultural history of the region.
