Campus Event to Focus on Immigrant Rights and Worker Rights
A film screening of “The Hand That Feeds” will be held on Thursday, Feb. 13 from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. in Campus Center rooms 174-76. The event will include remarks by Labor Center director Cedric de Leon and Western New England law professor and co-founder of the American Civil Liberties Union of Massachusetts' immigrant protection project Harris Freeman. Lunch will be provided and a group discussion will follow the screening.
“The Hand That Feeds” recounts the struggles of undocumented immigrant workers as they attempt to achieve fair wages and better working conditions in New York’s Upper East Side. It has received widespread acclaim from critics and recognition from multiple awards, including an Emmy nomination.
The film has been reviewed as “...inspiring. One could not view this film without arriving to a deeper understanding of labor organizing, immigrant workers, and the lessons of a sustained movement for social justice,” by Deborah Weissman, professor of law at the University of North Carolina. Shelby R. King, a writer for “The Portland Mercury” described it as “An inspiring movie for anyone who likes rooting for the underdog, and one that’s especially great for anyone involved in the fight for an increased minimum wage.”
This event is sponsored by the Partnership for Worker Education, human resources and the Office of Equity and Inclusion as part of the “Watch.Learn.Grow.” documentary film series, and is co-sponsored by the UMass Labor Center. RSVP to attend.
