Campus Energy Reduction Plan for Winter Intersession
Because many buildings will be unoccupied or less occupied during the coming winter intersession, UMass Amherst Physical Plant is implementing a plan to reduce energy consumption from the end of the Fall Semester on Dec. 21, 2022 through Feb. 3, 2023, before the Spring Semester starts.
The plan’s success will require your individual cooperation to help us reduce utility costs. This includes heating buildings and spaces during occupied hours and lowering the heating temperature set points during unoccupied hours.
This energy reduction plan will not be implemented in laboratory and research areas, the Campus Center Parking Garage, the UMass Police Station and other buildings or spaces that require continuous operation.
It is strongly recommended faculty and staff conserve energy with the following practices while away from the office:
- Shut off all electrical equipment that does not need to be on while you are away
- Turn off all the lights when leaving an office
- Turn off the computer and monitor, and shut down other office equipment such as copiers while away from the office
- Turn the thermostatic knob (where available and accessible) to 2 or 1, or reset the room thermostat (where available and accessible) to 55 degrees Fahrenheit
- Keep windows and exterior doors closed
- If the fume hood in a lab is not in use, close the sash completely
- Turn off any other equipment that may use energy unnecessarily
- Be aware of campus security; keep areas locked
