The university will celebrate Black History Month, also known as Black Heritage Month, during February with a series of art performances and activities, lectures, films and more.

Events include:

Film: “Talking Black in America”
Monday, Feb. 5, 5:30-7:30 p.m.
Integrative Learning Center, N151
Linguistics scholar Walt Wolfram will be screening “Talking Black in America,” a new documentary from the Language and Life Project at North Carolina State.

Performance: “Hairdressers Are My Heroes” by Artist Sonya Clark
Wednesday, Feb. 7, 5-7 p.m.
University Museum of Contemporary Art
Witness an ancient African hairstyle from a sculpture in the exhibition “Five Takes on African Art / 42 Paintings” by Fred Wilson, recreated by the hands of stylist Kamala Bhagat on the head of artist Sonya Clark.

Film: “Hidden Figures” with Talk by Whitney Battle-Baptiste

Science On The Screen presents the film “Hidden Figures,” followed by a talk by Whitney Battle-Baptiste, department of anthropology.

Lecture: 24th Annual Du Bois Lecture featuring Reiland Rabaka

Reiland Rabaka will deliver the 24th annual W.E.B. Du Bois Lecture, “W.E.B. Du Bois and the Emergence of the Civil Rights Movement.”

Black Heritage Month Community-Building Dinner
Wednesday, Feb. 28, 5:30-7:30 p.m.
Campus Center, Amherst Room, 10th Floor
Students, faculty and staff are invited to join CMASS and the Malcolm X Cultural Center for a community dinner that celebrates identities and inspires conversation over a shared meal.
