Anthology Curated by DEFA Outreach and Production Manager Shared at International Film Festivals

“Everyday Poetry: The Early Films of Helke Misselwitz,” curated by Hiltrud Schulz, DEFA outreach and production manager, was a success at the Anthology Film Archives in New York and at the prestigious Mar del Plata International Film Festival in Argentina in fall 2021.

From May 4 to 8, the Play-Doc International Festival in Spain will screen the retrospective and introduce Spanish audiences to the work of this fascinating (East) German director for the first time. Play-Doc writes about the director’s films: “Misselwitz touchingly but never sentimentally captures the smallness of humans confronting life and thus reveals their greatness.”

In June-July, MUBI will make three of these films available, and the complete retrospective will be released on the Kanopy educational streaming platform later this year. In addition to the films of Helke Misselwitz, Kanopy streams over 300 additional DEFA films, which UMass students, faculty and employees can watch for free through our library website.
