Andrew Barto Presented UMass Neurosciences Lifetime Achievement Award

Andrew Barto, professor emeritus in the College of Information and Computer Sciences, was honored with the UMass Neurosciences Lifetime Achievement Award for his pioneering research into reinforcement learning on Tuesday, May 28. The award was presented by Chancellor Subbaswamy after Barto gave his keynote lecture at the UMass Interdisciplinary Neurosciences Conference in the Campus Center.

Barto is known for co-writing the influential book, “Reinforcement Learning.” The book, which is now in its 2nd edition, is frequently used by neuroscientists studying the neural basis learning, as well as engineers and computer scientists who work on artificial intelligence.

The conference brought together neuroscientists and engineers, to find areas of overlap for collaboration. It included new approaches for visualizing and recording from neurons, manipulating gene expression in neurons, and understanding brain function.
