ADVANCE is launching a new seed grant program to foster the development of innovative and equitable collaborative research projects among faculty. These grants will contribute to the mission of the National Science Foundation (NSF) ADVANCE program to advance women faculty, including women faculty of color, in science and engineering. The deadline to apply is Sept. 17.

Proposals will be evaluated based on scientific merit, contributions to faculty equity and collaborative research among women and under-represented faculty, among other criteria. These one-year grants will range from $10,000 to $15,000 each. All tenure-track full-time faculty and full-time lecturers who are on continuing appointments with research are eligible. Proposals from faculty members in NSF-supported fields are especially encouraged.

“Our research with faculty at UMass indicates a need for funding programs, staff support and mentorship to advance equity in STEM. Innovative programs, such as the collaborative research seed grants, can lead to systemic and sustained institutional transformation, which is our goal for UMass,” says Laurel Smith-Doerr, Co-PI for ADVANCE.

The ADVANCE team will be holding a Collaborative Research Seed Grant Information Workshop on May 22 at 1 p.m. in Machmer E20. Applicants are strongly encouraged to attend. Consultation appointments are also available during the summer for those unable to attend the information workshop. For questions or to set up a consultation appointment, please contact Julie Woods at 413-545-1230 or woods@umass.edu.
