18th Colloquium of the North American Catalan Society at UMass Amherst
On April 15-17, UMass Amherst will host the 18th Biennial Colloquium of the North American Catalan Society, which will bring to campus a cohort of international scholars of Catalan language and culture.
Founded in 1978, the North American Catalan Society is a scholarly society dedicated to advancing the study of Catalan language and culture in the North American academy. It seeks to foster greater visibility for, and dissemination of, scholarship in the field of Catalan Studies, and serves as a public voice for a network of scholars in this field. The North American Catalan Society holds biennial colloquia, occasional symposia, and publishes Catalan Review: International Journal of Catalan Culture.
The keynote speakers of the conference will be Lluís Cabré, professor of Medieval Catalan literature at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona; Esteve Riambau, associate professor of communications at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and director of the Film Library of Catalonia; and Rosi Song, professor of Hispanic studies at Durham University, UK.
Prior to the three-day event, on April 14, UMass will host a one-day workshop for teachers of Catalan language and Culture in the US and Canada. The event will include guest talks by Llorenç Comajoan, from the Universitat de Vic, and Meghan Armstrong-Abrami, from UMass Amherst.
The conference, which has been scheduled to overlap with the screenings of the 14th Catalan Film Festival at UMass, has been organized by Albert Lloret, associate professor of Spanish and Catalan, with the support of several faculty in the Spanish and Catalan programs at UMass, Regina Galasso, Irene Massana, Guillem Molla and Barbara Zecchi.
