UMassBrut, a collaborative advocacy group of students, faculty, and staff from across the UMass system, was awarded the Boston Society of Architecture’s Commonwealth Award at a ceremony on March 5, 2025 in Boston.

When a snow or ice storm hits campus, more than 225 people representing Construction Services, Landscaping, Waste Management, Moving Services and Custodial departments, both residential and academic, are called in to work on removal and remediation.

Sustainable UMass is expanding the popular New2U program with a year-round, student-run thrift store to sell thousands of new or gently used items back to the UMass Amherst community at affordable prices.

Representatives from Facilities and Campus Services took part in the Anchor Collaborative Purchasing Fair, a conference hosted by the Western Massachusetts Economic Development Council held Nov. 14 at the UMass Amherst Henry M. Thomas III Center at Springfield.

UMass Amherst recently earned Gold level certification from the Re:wild Your Campus (RYC) Green Grounds program for its grounds-maintenance practices. The certification recognizes colleges and universities where at least 90% of managed areas are maintained without the use of synthetic pesticides or fertilizers. At UMass, that translates to over 1,000 acres managed by the Facilities Management Department.

“This certification speaks to our commitment to sustainability,” says Pam Monn, associate director of grounds, special projects and events, who credits her crew of 34 full-time landscape

While the campus was quiet during the summer, the staff at Facilities and Campus Services shifted into high gear to address needed improvements in preparation for the fall semester, completing over 9,300 individual projects, from small general maintenance jobs to major improvements impacting accessibility, classroom technology and student wellness.
