Film screening and panel discussion.

The UMass Fine Arts Center will premiere its new documentary film and companion concert film, and host a panel discussion about topics addressed in the documentary.

The documentary "Reclamation, the Legacy of Thomas de Hartmann" examines a range of topics brought forward via the Lviv National Philharmonic Orchestra of Ukraine's February 10, 2023 performance at UMass. Centered around the work of "lost" Ukrainian/American composer Thomas de Hartmann, the film looks at parallels between the Nazi occupation of Ukraine and the current Russian invasion, and the role of the arts in establishing and maintaining national identity.

Following the documentary screening, there will be a panel discussion with Lviv Philharmonic Conductor Theodore Kuchar; Efrem Marder and Elan Sicroff of the Thomas de Hartmann Project;  Audrey Altstadt, UMass professor of history; and Evan MacCarthy, Five College visiting associate professor of music history, most of whom also appear in the film.

The program will conclude with a concert film that captures the Lviv Philharmonic's full performance of de Hartmann's Violin Concerto, a piece written in response to the Nazi occupation of de Hartmann's homeland.
