The exhibition will present the Brutalist architecture of UMass Amherst and UMass Dartmouth in new and colorful ways. It will feature brightly colored photographs, original artwork by Lincoln Nemetz Carlson, PhD, and photography of recent vibrant renovations to Brutalist interiors on both campuses. "Brutalism in Color" not only connects Brutalist architecture to its dynamic original context, but also presents the architecture in an entirely new light. By emphasizing the geometry, sculptural elements, and avant-garde nature of these buildings through color, the exhibition shows off their beauty to both lovers and skeptics of Brutalism alike. By emphasizing color over the gray palette typically associated with Brutalism, it hopes to inspire a reassessment of the sometimes negative perceptions associated with these architectural masterpieces.
Exhibition in conjunction with the "Brutalism and the Public University: Past, Present and Future" Symposium. Free and open to the public.
