Obituary: Charles E. Carver, Jr., professor emeritus of Civil Engineering

Charles E. Carver, Jr., 83, professor emeritus of Civil Engineering, died June 25 at his home in South Hero, Vt., following a long illness.

Born in Burlington, Vt., he graduated with honors from Burlington High School in 1940 and received a scholarship to attend the University of Vermont, which he attended for two years and a summer semester, majoring in civil engineering.

In 1942, he enlisted as an aviation cadet in the Army Air Corps and was enlisted as an aviation cadet in the Army Air Corps. After service with a rescue squadron in the Southwest Pacific Theater, he was discharged and returned to his studies at UVM. He graduated cum laude in civil engineering and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.

After receiving a master’s degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1949, he joined the UMass faculty as an instructor in Civil Engineering.

In 1951, he returned to MIT to pursue his doctorate, which was awarded in 1955. He worked for a year as senior hydrodynamics engineer at the Glenn L. Martin Company in Baltimore and in 1956 was invited to join the research staff at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

In 1958, he returned to the Department of Civil Engineering and was appointed to full professor in 1962. He authored 32 papers in the fields of fluid mechanics, ocean engineering and engineering education.

He was a fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers and a member of the honorary societies of Tau Beta Pi, Sigma Xi and Phi Kappa Phi. He retired in 1987 after 31 years of service.

He leaves two daughters, Beth C. Elmer of Eagle Mountain, Utah, and Lynne M. Carver of South Hero, Vt.; a son, Charles E. Carver 3rd of South Berwick, Maine, a sister, five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at the First Congregational Church in South Hero on July 30 at 1 p.m.
