On Thursday, September 28th, in the Campus Center Auditorium., the College of Engineering hosted the Engineering Career Fair. With 1,532 students in attendance and 81 companies represented, this was the largest career fair in the history of the college.
Employers present included the Federal Aviation Administration, AbbVie, MITRE, MathWorks, Markforged, Marvell Semiconductor, Sensata, ISO New England, General Dynamics, TTM Technologies, Bristol Myers Squibb, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, Saint-Gobain, and Dell.
These employers came to campus in search of engineering majors for internships, co-ops, and full-time jobs. The event provided students with a unique opportunity to gain experience interacting with potential employers and develop an understanding of the employment landscape for engineering students.
Lynn Jang, a first-year Biomedical Engineering and Commonwealth Honors College student, was one of the students in attendance. She commented: “I found this event to be immensely beneficial, not only in developing networking skills by making new connections but also in taking advantage of the free resources to enhance the experience (LinkedIn headshot photoshoot, etc.). I was able to speak with many representatives and learn more about the different subfields within my major.”
Electrical Engineering alum Justin Kober '13, who now works as an engineer at Verizon, attended the event as a recruiter. He remarked that: “As a student attending the career fair, hearing the perspective and experience of the Verizon employees peaked my interests in joining Verizon. I really enjoyed being back on campus for a recruiting event to share my experiences and perspective with such a large group of talented students. The career fair was exciting to be a part of and I look forward to interacting with students at future events.”
To students who might feel anxious or intimidated to attend such a major event, Jang offers this advice: “I understand the nerves that come with imagining attending such a large event, but my advice to others is to just do it: clean up that resume with your resume advisor and just go! I cannot recommend going to career fairs enough—it was a great time!”
In addition to this Engineering Career Fair, engineering students had the opportunity to attend an array of other engineering-related career fairs throughout the fall semester, including the Tech Jobs & Internships Fair, the Civil & Environmental Engineering Fair, the Building & Construction Technology Career, the Engineering/Tech Career Fair, and the Life Sciences & Biotech Career Fair.
