Fund: Samuel F. Conti Faculty Fellowship Awards
Amount of funding: $3500 and one-year release

Funding for:

These Fellowships are managed by the office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Engagement (VCRE) and provide a one-year release from teaching and service duties in addition to a $3,500 cash award.

The Armstrong Fund for Science was established in 2006 through a gift from John and Elizabeth Armstrong.  Its goal is to encourage faculty at UMass Amherst to pursue research that has a significant likelihood of major science or engineering impact

Fund: Seed Grants from the Institute of Diversity Sciences
Amount of funding: $5,000 to $12,000
Eligibility: Team proposals must ensure that the topic of the project is related to human diversity, disparities, and/or inclusion broadly construed. The proposal should make an explicit case for how the proposed work fits this theme.

Project team members must come from at least two different departments at UMass, and ideally (but not required) from different colleges/schools on campus. Team members may also include community partners. The emphasis of the project should be on building multidisciplinary connections. Both new teams of individuals who have not collaborated previously as well as pre-existing teams that have had prior collaborations are eligible for this seed grant, as long as the proposed project is new and not funded by another source.

The PI must be a faculty member at UMass Amherst; graduate students, postdocs, faculty at the Five Colleges, and community members may be co-PIs.

Proposed projects may involve new data collection or secondary analyses of existing datasets.

Priority will be given to:

Projects that will be leveraged toward external grant applications. Proposals should provide details of the planned grant submission (e.g., name(s) of agency/foundation, timeline, and RFP/program announcement).

Projects that involve graduate students and/or undergraduate students and thereby provide hands-on student training.

Projects that include a social impact goal.

This seed grant mechanism is one important way to achieve this goal by (1) encouraging new multidisciplinary research collaborations on human diversity among faculty and students from different units on campus that can be later leveraged to seek larger external research grants; (2) offering opportunities for mentored research experience for graduate and undergraduate students interested in human diversity in ways that cut across traditional disciplinary boundaries; and (3) encouraging research teams to consider social impact goals.

Fund: TIDE Ambassadors (Teaching for Inclusiveness, Diversity, & Equity)
Amount of funding: 1500
Eligibility: Faculty at all stages of experience in teaching for inclusiveness, diversity, and equity are encouraged to apply. Faculty Fellows are required to meet the following criteria:

Full-time position (open to both tenure and non-tenure track faculty)

Demonstrates high interest in developing capacity for teaching diverse students in inclusive and equitable ways

Potential for making a positive impact on the teaching culture in the home department, school/college, and/or broader campus community.

The overarching purpose of the program is to establish a learning community that offers participating faculty fellows sustained opportunities to engage with and support each other as well as to learn together so that they are able to develop the knowledge and skills to share this learning with the UMass community. Experiential, collaborative, and reflective learning are integral elements of the TIDE program.

Interdisciplinary Faculty Research Awards

• Funding for: The Provost, in coordination with the Chancellor, the Vice Chancellor for Research and Engagement, and the Deans of the Colleges and Schools, will offer seed funds totaling up to $600,000 to support interdisciplinary research at UMass. The goal of this program is to empower creativity; to promote collaborations, especially those that those that foster diversity, equity, and inclusion; and to attract external funding across our colleges and schools.

Zuckerberg Endowed Leadership Prize

Zuckerberg Endowed Leadership Award is designed to reward leaders of courage, conviction, and selflessness who have devoted their time and talent to helping the University of Massachusetts to accomplish its goals. Recognizing that leadership may be found anywhere, faculty, coaches, and staff of the University of Massachusetts are encouraged to apply. The award will alternate between a faculty member (when it is termed the chair) and a coach/staff member (when it is termed the prize).

National Trust for Historic Preservation
