Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition

Fund: 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition
Funder: UMass Amherst
Amount of funding: Final Round First Place Finisher: $1,000

Final Round Runner-Up: $500

Final Round People’s Choice (determined by audience vote): $500
Eligibility: UMass Amherst graduate students from any discipline are welcome to participate if they meet all the eligibility requirements. Participants must be:

  • Enrolled full-time as a graduate student at UMass Amherst;
  • In good academic standing;
  • Present on their independent academic research; and
  • Available to participate in person in a preliminary round of competition and, if selected as a finalist, the campus Final.

Funding for:

The University of Massachusetts Amherst Three Minute Thesis (3MT) celebrates the research accomplishments of our graduate students while helping students develop their presentation and communication skills. These popular competitions have become a global phenomenon and offer graduate students the opportunity to communicate the significance of their research to a general audience, all in three minutes or less.

Pre-Dissertation Research Grants

Eligibility: UMass Amherst doctoral students enrolled in a campus-based degree program and in good academic standing are eligible to apply. Students may receive this grant only once. Applicants who were not awarded a grant in a previous application cycle are eligible to reapply. Students may accept only one Predissertation, Fieldwork, or Dissertation Research Grant from the Graduate School in an academic year

Predissertation Grants of up to $1,000 offer early career doctoral students the opportunity to evaluate the feasibility of planned dissertation research, generate pilot data, or establish the necessary networks

Dissertation Research Grants provide up to $1,000 for costs associated with data collection or analysis.

Dissertation Fieldwork Grants

Eligibility: UMass Amherst doctoral students enrolled in a campus-based degree program and in good academic standing are eligible to apply. Students may receive this grant only once. Funding for:

These grants of up to $5,000 provide support for fieldwork expenses. For the purpose of this grant, fieldwork is defined as data collection that takes place for an extended period of time (weeks or months) outside the western Massachusetts geographical area. These grants are not designed to fund data analysis, only expenses related to data collection.

Dissertation Completion Fellowship

Funding for:

The Graduate School, with support from the Provost, is offering $12,000 Dissertation Completion Fellowships for Spring 2022. The aim is to provide students with the time and focus it takes to bring the dissertation to completion, after Covid-related disruptions. We anticipate awarding 10-15 fellowships. Additional funds beyond the stipend may be available to cover fees and health insurance, if necessary.

Travel Grants

$500 for National conferences

$300 for New England regional conferences
Eligibility: Students currently enrolled as a Masters or Doctoral student in the College of Education are eligible to apply for conference travel grants to subsidize their attendance as a presenter at a regional, national or international conference. These funds are not designed to cover research related expenses.
