Energy Transition Institute Symposium to be Held May 15 at UMass Amherst

Second annual event will feature students, faculty and staff from across campus presenting their work on clean energy, climate and decarbonization

The Energy Transition Institute at UMass Amherst will hold its second annual symposium on Monday, May 15 from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event is free and open to the public with advance registration.

The Energy Transition Institute (ETI) Symposium gives students, faculty and staff from across the UMass Amherst campus the opportunity to present their work on clean energy, climate and decarbonization. Participants are welcome to share their thoughts and work on all fundamental and applied areas of energy research and climate action, including STEM, social sciences, humanities, business and interdisciplinary studies. Students and teachers from area schools, colleges and communities are encouraged to attend. 

The event begins at 10:30 a.m. with a career panel discussion featuring Jose LaSalle ’16 of florrent, Michael Ising of Quest Energy Group and Susannah Hatch of the Environmental League of Massachusetts. The panelists will discuss insights from their respective organizations and their roles in energy transition and climate action work. They will provide assessments and strategies to support students’ next steps into higher degrees or work in the field.  

LaSalle has been accepted into the Advancing Climatetech and Clean Energy Leaders Program (ACCEL), the new accelerator intended to bolster BIPOC-led startups. Ising is a project manager focused on energy modeling and analysis, energy audits and tax abatements, and Hatch is director of clean energy policy for the Environmental League of Massachusetts. 

There will be two poster sessions in the afternoon. Chancellor Kumble Subbaswamy will provide a welcome to afternoon attendees and introduce State Rep. Mindy Domb and keynote speaker State Rep. Jeffrey Roy. The event will conclude with a 3:30 p.m. presentation from Ted Mendoza, UMass capital projects manager, on UMass Carbon Zero.
