Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and Statistics
Build a solid foundation for any quantitative discipline or career field.
Mathematics is the foundation of many disciplines across the sciences and beyond, and the mathematics and statistics degree at UMass Amherst will teach you about the most important themes in the field.
You can choose to concentrate on one of six areas, or create your own specialization to suit your career and personal interests:
- Actuarial science
- Applied math
- Individually designed
- Math computing
- Pure math
- Statistics and data science
You’ll learn everything from background concepts to computing paradigms (whether in Java, Python, MATLAB, R, and/or SAS). When you complete your degree, you’ll have a clear sense of the field and of your interests within it.
The BS in mathematics and statistics will prepare you for a career in a wide range of fields. At the same time, it is excellent preparation for medical school, dental school, or law school, or to pursue graduate work in mathematics, statistics, or fields like biostatistics, business administration, computer science, engineering, linguistics, operations research, and philosophy.
