1. Tie hair back when using: glass grinder, soldering irons, acetylene torches, and drill/drill press. Remove or tie back any necklaces, scarves, bracelets, sweatshirt strings, or accessories that could get caught by the machinery.
2. Wear goggles when operating: glass grinders and cutters, soldering irons, engraver or dremel tool, acetylene torches, drills, stained glass finishing chemicals, and photography darkroom chemicals
3. Wear gloves when selecting and cutting glass.
4. Exercise caution when soldering with acetylene torches. Wear filtered goggles when the torch is lit. Use the provided striker to light the torch. Never use matches or a lighter. Be aware of clothing, hair, and other flammables. Always aim torch away from people and flammable objects. Turn off valve on torch when not soldering and place in holder. Never touch hot metals. Quench hot metals in water before putting them into the pickle. Neutralize pickled metals immediately in baking soda. Use copper tongs for moving metals in and out of the pickle and baking soda solution. In the event of the flux or pickle spilling, contact a staff person.
5. Exercise caution with the stained glass soldering iron. Never touch any part of the iron except the handle and avoid iron touching the wires. Iron remains hot when unplugged. When not in use, turn iron off and place in soldering iron holder.
6. Exercise caution when using the photography darkroom and/or other photo chemicals. Avoid eye contact and ingestion of all chemicals. Clean all contacted areas with ample water. Avoid spills; however, in the event of a spill, promptly consult a staff person. Handling of all chemicals, especially film developing tank, must occur over the sink. Wear gloves whenever possible when working with the photo chemicals. Goggles must be worn when handling the darkroom chemicals.
7. Carefully monitor fabric irons. Do not leave them unattended and turn them off when not in use. Never leave irons face down.
8. When using blades, cut away from fingers. Always be aware of the placement of your fingers when utilizing sharp objects, such as the sewing machine and leather needles, staple guns, and pieces of glass. If a blade is dull and must be snapped, ask a staff member.
9. Immediately report all injuries to a staff member.
10. Tools must be signed out with a SU Craft Center membership card and returned to the front desk. Members’ guests may sign out tools through their accompanying host. Both hosts and guests must sign a liability form.
11. Pay for all materials before starting projects. Only UCard debit and debit/credit are acceptable methods of payment.
12. Seek instruction on how to properly use tools and practice proper tool use. Do not expect staff to do your project for you.
13. No food or open-toed shoes are allowed in the SU Craft Center. Covered drinks are OK.
14. No individual under the influence of any substance will be permitted in the SU Craft Center.
15. No pets, skateboards, and bicycles are allowed in the Craft Center.
16. Clean up after yourself and allow sufficient time before closing to do so. All members must vacate the premises by closing time; this applies to floor hours as well as workshops.
17. Pick up finished and/or unfinished work within a one-month period. The Craft Center is not responsible for personal belongings or work left behind. Label all work with name and date, including year. Any unlabeled work will be recycled or discarded. Please protect your valuables. Projects left behind at the end of the semester will be recycled or discarded. Please see the Director, Assistant Director, or area coordinator if you are unable to remove your project.
18. Respect others and their property and clean up your area when finished.
