Positivity and Relaxation Training

Positivity and Relaxation Training (PART)

The 1-credit, 9-week Positivity and Relaxation Training (PART) program helps participants develop a self-care routine to help manage stress, improve their outlook and enhance their quality of life.  Developed at the Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital, the PART program teaches participants a variety of mind body practices and self-care interventions:

  • How to recognize their personal responses to stress
  • Meditative techniques that elicit the relaxation response
  • How to change thought patterns and emotional outlook to adaptive and positive perspectives
  • Techniques to improve sleep, eating and physical activity
  • Ways to harness creativity, humor and appreciations to cultivate positivity and personal well-being

Search SPIRE for UNIV 100 (undergraduate students) or UNIV 600 (graduate students). We offer many sections every semester!

Science of Thriving (SOT)

Why The Science of Thriving?

Our evidence-based resilience & wellbeing course is a proven gamechanger for UMass students.  The innovative curriculum and strength-based pedagogy combine to benefit students from all backgrounds and at all levels of academic achievement. From academic probation to the Dean’s List, from sailing along to stressed and struggling, unprecedented numbers of students are experiencing a boost in resilience and a bump in belonging. Confidence and self-efficacy rise. Engagement and coping strengthen. SoT gives students a roadmap to wellbeing, self-compassion and a growth mindset. After SoT, students report greater readiness to succeed in college academic work, to belong & thrive in this community, to graduate from UMass and meet their next life challenges gracefully and successfully.

Search SPIRE for UNIV 203 (undergraduate students) or UNIV 690STA (graduate students).

Science of Thriving curriculum is also used in a number of First Year and Transfer Seminar courses, including the Elaine Marieb College of Nursing, School of Public Health and Health Sciences, and the Emerging Scholars’ Program at Commonwealth Honors College.
