Associate Professor of Community Health Education Daniel López-Cevallos and a team of researchers, including doctoral candidate Mariana Pinto-Alvarez and Ecuador-based colleagues Irene Torres and Daniel Romero-Alvarez, have contributed a chapter to the textbook Health and Healthcare Systems: A Global View. Their chapter on Ecuador provides an overview of the country’s geographic, population, and cultural characteristics. Moreover, it examines the health profile of the Ecuadorian population, highlighting prevalent morbidity and mortality issues, and their social determinants. The authors conclude with a call for building a community-based healthcare system, incorporating community voices in policy decisions aimed at addressing systemic inequities.
