MPH in Environmental Health Sciences

Prepare to become a leader who can understand and mitigate the effects of environmental stressors on the human health. UMass Amherst’s MPH in environmental health sciences (EHS) equips you with the knowledge and leadership skills to make the planet a safer, healthier place for humans and other species.
Designed to prepare working public health professionals, our 42-credit program combines a foundation in environmental health sciences with broader training in public health sciences. Students will also be able to take elective courses focused on environmental and molecular epidemiology, environmental monitoring and exposure science, and environmental toxicology.
NOTE: This is a STEM designated program.

Practicum Experience
All MPH students complete a practicum, which offers an in-depth practical experience working with environmental health scientists and public health professionals to tackle real-world problems. Most students complete their practicum during the summer between their first and second years.
Culminating Experience
Our MPH students also complete a capstone project on an environmental health topic of their choice. In EHS, students may work on a smaller-scale research project in the lab, conduct a secondary data analysis with support from EHS faculty, or complete an in-depth literature review.
Low Student-to-Faculty Ratio
All MPH students are paired with a faculty mentor to help them select courses, tailor their practicum experience, and map out future plans in the profession. Students get the one-on-one attention they need to succeed in the program and beyond.
Featured class
In this class students will learn about new methods and approaches and will perform a project based on next-generation sequencing, starting from tissues of exposed and control animals through bioinformatic analysis of molecular pathways.

Prospective students must apply first through the SOPHAS site and then the UMass Graduate School Supplemental Application, which will be emailed to you upon completion of the SOPHAS application.
