Tubist Tyler Woodbury Selected as Semi-Finalist in International Competition

Tyler Woodbury, a tuba student in the department of music and dance, is one of only 10 collegiate semi-finalists chosen from an international field by the Leonard Falcone International Euphonium and Tuba Festival. In August, Woodbury and the other Falcone semi-finalists will compete for top honors at the renowned Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Twin Lake, Michigan. Woodbury is a 2015 graduate of Chicopee Comprehensive High School, where he studied with then-band director Tony Blanksteen ’11 MM.

Woodbury also recently won the Principal Tuba position for this summer’s Monteux School and Music Festival in Hancock, Maine and was also a co-recipient of the Howard Lebow Memorial Scholarship, given by the department of music and dance to the student that has distinguished himself as a performing musician.

He is returning to UMass in the fall to finish his degrees in music education and music performance, where he currently maintains a 3.85 GPA. “Tyler is a passionate musician and educator who cares deeply about the people around him,” said tuba faculty member John Bottomley. “His love of music and his drive to learn have made him one of the most enjoyable students I have worked with in my career.”
