DEFA Film Library Collaborates with Black German Heritage & Research Association
The DEFA Film Library and the Black German Heritage & Research Association (BGHRA) will also co-present a film at this year’s annual BGHRA conference (Feb. 23-25), Art as Resistance: Transcultural Expressions.
Registered conference participants can stream the 2022 German documentary “The Homes We Carry”) from February 19 to 26. They will also have the opportunity to attend a virtual discussion with the film’s German-Ghanian director on Feb. 24 at 9 a.m. (ET).
The Homes We Carry premiered at the 2022 DOK Leipzig International Film Festival. The film is a portrait of a family torn apart by the turmoil of world history between Germany, Mozambique and South Africa. It tells the story of a young Afro-German mother named Sarah who was raised in East Berlin, and whose father, a contract worker from Mozambique who once worked in East Germany, she only knew from a photograph. As an adult woman she decides to visit her father’s birth country.
Mariana Ivanova, academic director of the DEFA Film Library says, “We continue to grow our collaboration with BGHRA, which started in 2020, and to amplify the voices of Black German artists and filmmakers. After our last project at the 2022 German Studies Conference, where we screened films by German-Nigerian-Welsh director Branwen Okpako in tandem with a panel discussion, this is another opportunity to illuminate Black diasporic histories and artistry and to bring them to North American audiences.”
