Sunscreen and food found at a picnic

D. Julian McClements, Distinguished Professor in the College of Natural Sciences's Department of Food Science, recently commented in a Wall Street Journal article (published in collaboration with Mint) asking why titanium dioxide is in both sunscreen and foods such as frozen pizza. In short, the substance is added to food to make it look brighter:

"'A very small concentration makes something look very white and bright,' said David Julian McClements, a professor in the Food Science department at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Adding it with other colors can make those colors pop, he said."
