Matthew Moore Gives 'Omnivore' Podcast Advice on Securing Funding
Content

On a recent episode of the Omnivore podcast, Matthew D. Moore, associate professor in the College of Natural Sciences's Department of Food Science, was asked about "the dire state of agrifood research funding in the United States and tips on how to find and secure funding."
Moore started by sharing near-term funding goals for his lab: "We have sort of one area that we’re hoping to expand into...NIH and NSF...in the coming years related to fundamental viral pathogenesis and the influence of the microbiome on viral infection, as well as newer animal models for norovirus. And then we have a lot of projects that are ongoing that we've...had more success with funding related to the concentration and detection of these viruses from the environment."
On the topic of research funding, Moore suggested leveraging existing relationships with mentors:
Going about funding is always—it’s been a challenge, and a lot of it is leaning on your mentors who you did your PhD with, and obviously you learn from other professors that they collaborate with, as well.
Some of it is just learning by example. Obviously it’ll depend on different peoples’ mentorship styles as to how active they are in getting you grant-writing experience.
