State investment in innovation, research, and workforce development will be critical to strengthening Western Massachusetts' economy, particularly as the region navigates uncertainty surrounding federal funding.
State representatives Mindy Domb and Aaron Saunders, along with state senator Jo Comerford, recently spoke at the Amherst Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual legislative breakfast at the Inn on Boltwood in downtown Amherst. Saunders pointed to UMass Amherst’s $120 million Future of Food Initiative—of which the College of Natural Sciences is a critical part—as a sign of potential economic growth in Western Massachusetts:
“Saunders said the recently announced…Future of Food Initiative at the University of Massachusetts should bolster and transform farms across the region, including the university’s Cold Spring Orchard in Belchertown, his hometown.”

Made possible through a gift to the university from Paul Manning (’77, ’24 HON) and Diane Manning, the Future of Food Initiative represents a major opportunity to build on the region's agricultural heritage while positioning Western Massachusetts as a leader in food science, sustainable agriculture, and food innovation. Through new research facilities, industry partnerships, and workforce development, the initiative aims to translate university expertise into commercial opportunities, support local farmers and food producers, and create pathways to high-quality jobs.
This investment underscores the potential of Western Massachusetts' growing food and agriculture sector to drive economic growth, attract new businesses, and establish the region as a national hub for the future of food.
