Food Science Alum Credited with Creating Nova Scotian Moon Mist Ice Cream Flavor
Content
The Daily Meal recently identified UMass Amherst Food Science alum Bruce Hart as the creator of a celebrated Canadian ice cream flavor known as Nova Scotian Moon Mist. It is said that this flavor combo of banana, grape, and blue raspberry (or bubblegum) "has to be tasted to be believed." The origin story of this Canadian treasure involves a wartime trip down to Massachusetts, and influence from UMass Amherst's renowned Department of Food Science:
"Sometime around World War II, Bruce Hart traveled from Nova Scotia down to the University of Massachusetts to study food science. While there, he experimented with a mixture of ice cream flavors, eventually settling on a banana, grape, and blue raspberry trio. Allegedly, he wasn't just the first to create the concoction (and name it Moon Mist) but the first to sell it back at his creamery in Nova Scotia."
