Faculty

The college is committed to fostering a dynamic intellectual community free of bias and prejudice. Offering opportunities for understanding differences while increasing the diversity of our faculty and staff is an ongoing and top priority. The college and its departments continue to make substantial efforts to recruit and retain faculty from underrepresented groups. These efforts are in collaboration with faculty, staff, and department and university leadership.

Mentoring

CNS Peer Mentoring

CNS peer mentoring groups for women faculty

These informal networks bring together faculty who come from various departments across CNS and cut across ranks (lecturers, research faculty, assistant, associate and full professors). These self-run facilitated groups enhance collegiality, learning, and career advancement at UMass Amherst. Group formation is based on common interests and schedules. Informational mixers are held each fall for women faculty interested in joining a group.

CNS peer mentoring groups for faculty of color and immigrant faculty

These self-run groups of mixed gender faculty also cut across departments and ranks. Similar to the women’s groups, they foster collegiality, learning, and career advancement. These groups use the same model as the women’s mentoring groups.

To indicate interest in joining a group, please complete the CNS Mentoring Group Form.

Campus Mentoring

Institute for Teaching Excellence and Faculty Development (TEFD)

The UMass Amherst Center for Teaching and Learning offers grants for establishing mentoring relationships.

The Distinguished Scientist and Engineer Seminar Series

The Distinguished Scientist and Engineer Seminar Series provides support to faculty teams to invite and host scientists or engineers from underrepresented groups to visit campus. During their time on campus, the visitors will give a research presentation of broad interest to the STEM community at UMass and lead a second workshop to share their personal perspective on navigating an academic career.

Any group of faculty within CNS or COE may nominate visitors for the series.
